Subject: ENC welcomes NLD’s Decision to Re-register
November 20, 2011
The Ethnic Nationalities Council (ENC) welcomes the 18.11.2011 announcement of the National League for Democracy (NLD) to re-registerthe party and to contest the upcoming by-elections. The ENC salutes
the political courage of the NLD leadership.
The Ethnic Nationalities Council believes that the political problems in Burma today can be resolved through a negotiated settlement. The understanding reached between NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and
President Thein Sein had a positive outcome that led to the NLD party registration. We urge the government to take a similar approach, stop the fighting in Kachin State immediately and enter into a dialogue
with the ethnic groups.
The ENC welcomes the fact that Burma will chair ASEAN in 2014. In order to be able to carry out this prestigious task effectively, we call on the government to cooperate closely with ASEAN and the
international community. Ending the ethnic conflict, eradicating poverty, human and drug trafficking, combating HIV-AIDS and other infectious diseases, are some of the regional and international problems that need to be urgently tackled. We call on the international community - including UN, EU, USA, Japan, China, India,
Bangladesh and ASEAN nations - to support such initiatives.
The Ethnic Nationalities Council further calls on the government of Burma to immediately release the remaining political prisoners so that they can also make a positive contribution in rebuilding a Union of
Burma that we all can be proud of.
The Ethnic Nationalities Council was founded to represent the political spirations of the seven ethnic States and to encourage the resolution of political problems through political means.
