Myanmar President Likely to Visit Bangladesh



Dhaka Feb 7: President of Myanmar U Thein Sein is likely to visit Bangladesh by the middle of next month.

According to sources at the Foreign Ministry, although both sides are still working on fixing a convenient time, the head of state of Myanmar is most likely to visit Bangladesh during March 13-16.

The visit is aimed at further strengthning the existing relationship between the two neighbours and also promoting bilateral cooperation in all sectors, especially trade and investment.

It is going to be a returning visit for President Sein, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who paid a bilateral visit to Myanmar in the first week of December last year, had extended an invitation to President Sein to visit Dhaka during her trip, a senior offical told The Independent on Monday.

“We are still working on the details of the issues that are expected to be highlighted during the official talks between the two leaders. The entire range of bilateral isues will come up for discussion,” he said.

Both sides will also review the progress in implementation of the 15 point joint statement issued in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar, during the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.

Foreign Ministry officials said that issues relating to the repatriation of Rohingya refugees and connectivity between Kunming (China) and Chittagong via Myanmar are priorities for Bangladesh.

Dhaka would highlight these issues during the Myanmar President’s visit.
